discussions of ‘what is art’?

Art isn’t just a talent. It upsets me when I find myself around a group of talented individuals who don’t really have anything to tell the world. They have the skill to say anything, so they recreate the same messages of their favorite art, in their own style. They don’t even think about what they are saying though.

I was with some talented musicians the other night and they were dissecting music as they listened to it, commenting on the different chords used and the style that was produced. It made me wonder if this is what the Beatles did, or what Bob Marley did. Did they sit around and approve of the way music sounded or really concentrate on what the music was saying. I might guess that the best musicians would be paying attention to both.

I heard someone else say the other day they didn’t like a band because the music was too simple. I suppose I understand what this means but I’m not sure I like music because it is complex or takes skill. If a musician doesn’t have talent for making something that sounds good, that’s one thing, but if a musician makes simple things sound good, then it is still good.
