“Why am I?” —— Why is an exponential question, that if asked enough, always leads to some form of theological understanding. Of course your perception of the ultimate “why are we here?” plays a part in how you interact with here and now. I’ve said it before, but again here, if you think your actions in this life (now) will have an effect on a different existence, it will effect the way you interact with this life. I try myself to focus everything on the here and now, so I refuse to take anything that talks about another high plane of existence serious. The largest ‘why’ that I focus on, is still relevant to this life that I currently live. That said, I don’t have any answer to why life started on this planet, why the universe exists at all, or why I wake up the same person everyday. These questions are certainly entertaining and philosophical, and the fact I don’t have any story or understanding for these questions might not be a good thing.
The question of “Why I am here?”, is much like “How did I get here?”. It is certainly a great question to meditate on, from time to time. Why am I here in this room writing on this computer… Why am I in the USA… When you do think about this question though, try to stay focused on the ‘Why’ that you have control over. When you start thinking about why you were born or why you exist you lose a sense of power in your situation. This disconnection is not useful. The main focus of the question ‘Why’ is to evaluate and re-evaluate the choices you have made, and to steer yourself in the best direction you can in your future choices.
Personal: Why am I here?
I have yet to really find a purpose and not having found a purpose, I have to do something. The choice is what do you do the rest of your life? I don’t know; I’ve never known. So right now, I choose to do something, anything, in hopes that a purpose presents itself or that I somehow find out who am I, by doing the normal everyday things around me.
Lastly, your choices reflect your inabilities. Think on this statement for a minute: The choice you make, reflect the things you are not good at and ultimately your identity. You can’t do everything in one life, its impossible. For instance there are roughly 6000 languages in the world, you can’t become fluent in them all, that is impossible. You can learn to speak as many as possible, but doing this means you won’t excel in any one language. Knowing the choices you make reflect who you are and who you become, why are you going to be the person you become in one year from now?
