The person holding the chainsaw

What are you doing? You’re about to cut down a tree. I know this is just your job. You need a job and this is what you know how to do. There is a whole system out there that you cannot be considered responsible for. You didn’t create the desire for trees, but there is a market out there for trees. This is just your small participation in a whole system that you aren’t responsible for.

I want to let you know, I could never hold that chainsaw. I hold this as a moral standard for myself. When I consider if something I am doing, I try to think is this like holding the chainsaw. I could never hold the chainsaw. I can drive a car, this isn’t as bad to me, most of us drive cars. I’m not responsible for the system of cars. No one is. It’s a system that we use and this system is destructive. I just know I couldn’t hold the chainsaw.

There must be a lot of people doing what you are doing. You must know a lot of people and it must almost seem natural and a normal thing to do, like me and driving cars. It’s what we do, we aren’t responsible, we just do a small part of a system we can all agree isn’t healthy. It must be the people who want trees that are really responsible, and I’d agree they deserve some blame. I could never hold the chainsaw though. I just couldn’t cut into a large tree on the edge of a forest.

It’s not like there is blood involved. Trees are trees, they don’t bleed, they don’t care. You cut them down, they fall over, and they go to a factory, to someone else, turned into needed houses for the growing population. Houses are needed. You are probably hoping to buy a house at some point, and they requires trees, at least for the kinds of houses you are familiar with.

I couldn’t hold that chainsaw though. It would be too much for me. I don’t mean to judge you and your actions by saying that I couldn’t do what you are doing, because i consider it immoral, but I don’t think of you as a needed executioner. I don’t thank you for doing what you are doing because I couldn’t do it. I live in houses made of wood that have been cut down by chainsaws, but I don’t think, thank you for someone else being able to hold the chainsaw. I don’t think we should be cutting down trees.

They say for every tree that is cut down two are planted. That is true for humans, every human that dies, there are two that are born, if not more. Trees live longer lives that humans do though, they keep the forest together and they don’t mono-crop themselves. You can tell the difference between a tree farm and a forest, I’m sure you have a good understand of the difference. Tree farms must be easier to clear cut. These trees were made by us to be cut down. But we both know there is a difference between the tree farms planted and the forests of trees. I still couldn’t hold the chainsaw, even in a tree farm. I’d feel as if I was on the front line of a system I don’t think should exist.
